Preparation of highly active AlSBA-15-supported platinum catalyst for thiophene hydrodesulfurization

Preparation of highly active AlSBA-15-supported platinum catalyst for thiophene hydrodesulfurization

Kanda, Yasuharu; Aizawa, Tomohiro; Kobayashi, Takao; Uemichi, Yoshio; Namba, Seitaro; Sugioka, Masatoshi

The catalytic activities of various noble metals (Pt, Pd, Rh, and Ru) supported on siliceous SBA-15 and Al-containing SBA-15 (AlSBA-15) for hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of thiophene at 350 C were investigated. AlSBA-15 was prepared by a grafting method using aluminum isopropoxide (Al(OC3H7)3) hexane solution. The HDS activity of Pt/AlSBA-15 catalyst was the highest among those of various supported noble metal catalysts, and this activity was higher than that of commercial CoMo/Al2O3 HDS catalyst. The catalysts were characterized by XRD analysis, hydrogen adsorption, 2-propanol dehydration, cumene cracking, and FT-IR. Dispersion of Pt on SBA-15 was remarkably enhanced by Al grafting. It was revealed that the acidity of AlSBA-15 was higher than that of SBA-15. Furthermore, Brønsted acid sites were observed on AlSBA-15. FT-IR spectra of thiophene adsorbed on AlSBA-15 indicate that thiophene molecules interact with Brønsted acid sites on the surface of AlSBA-15 and that the strength of this interaction was stronger than that of SBA-15. Based on these results, thiophene molecules activated on Brønsted acid site of AlSBA-15 and hydrogen molecules activate to form spillover hydrogen on Pt particles in Pt/AlSBA-15 catalyst in the HDS of thiophene.

The effect of initial bubble conditions on the motion of a gas bubble rising in viscous liquids was investigated by 3d-computations. Then, a coupled level set/volume-of-fluid (CLSVOF) method was used as a numerical method. For low Eotvos and very low Morton numbers regions predicting bubble motion with non-linear behavior, it was computationally demonstrated that the resulting final state of bubble depended on initial bubble conditions: different bubble rising motion depending on initial bubble conditions were numerically reproduced. The numerical results obtained in this study agreed with the experimental observation by Tomiyama et al.

Three-dimensional direct numerical simulations of the motion of a gas bubble rising in viscous liquids were carried out by a coupled level-set/volume-of-fluid (CLSVOF) method that combines some of the advantages of the volume-of-fluid (VOF)method with the level-set (LS). In our study, physical properties of real gas-liquid systems were introduces in the computations: the density ratio between both phases can be up to about 800 and the viscosity ratio reaches - about 50000. Consequently, it will be shown that we can numerically reproduce three-dimensional bubble rise motion including nonlinear dynamics for the full range of bubble shapes and physical parameters (e.g. high Reynolds number) with good agreement with experimental results. Also, we shall show the effectiveness and validity of our numerical (CLSVOF) methods for two-phase flow.

The Kyoto protocol has been ratified by the developed countries on the 16th of Febrary, 2005. Japan must carry out the promised reduction of 6.0 percent from 1990 levels between 2008 and 2012. The trasportation sector in the final energy consumption has been particularly increaced in comparison with the industry and the residential and commercial sectors. The final energy consumption of the transportation sector will have been decreased in the promised reduction, provided that the modal shift of the car and the cargo truck for the bus and the train takes place in 55 - 60 percent. The ratio of the renewable energy versus the primary energy in the developed countries compares Gini's coefficients which are expressive of the income disparity.

Time-dependent variational principle with constraints for parametrized wave functions

Time-dependent variational principle with constraints for parametrized wave functions

Ohta, Katsuhisa

The time-dependent variational principle in the stationary action principle form is formulated with constraintconditions for parametrized wave functions. The constraint conditions are classified into the first and thesecond classes as in Dirac’s constrained classical mechanics based on the commutability of operators. If thelocal bases in the parametrized wave functions construct a complete basis set, the classification of constraintswith the commutator becomes equivalent to that with the complex generalized Poisson brackets (CGPB).However, in approximate wave functions with limited variational parameters, the equivalence between theCGPB and the commutator of operators is lost. The first-class constraints and the constants of motion classifiedwith the commutator should be reconsidered as the pseudo-second-class constraints in the approximate wavefunctions.
